Zhongdai Town is a time-honored town which has lasted for thousands of years. It is a northern portal of the downtown area of Pinghu City. A legend has it that a clan surnamed Zhong from the Wu Yue State during the Five Dynasties (A.D. 907-960) lived here for a long time. As a result, the place was named Zhongxi and later renamed Zhongdai. During the Ming (A.D. 1368-1644) and Qing (A.D. 1644-1912) dynasties, Zhongdai was well-developed in agriculture, commerce, and culture and history. It was widely known as “one of the four major towns of Jiaxing” together with Wangdian, Xinhuang and Xinfeng in Jiaxing. It has been put under the administration of Pinghu since November 1958.

The beautiful scenery of flowers along the way in Chang’an City were no more today, with only oral stories passed around. However, in Zhongdai Ancient Town, tens of thousands of sakura trees have been planted to restore the splendid scenery of sakura which crossed the ocean to reach the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907) and amazed the world one thousand years ago. This is known as Sakura Town.

Located in the north of the national-level Pinghu Economic and Technological Development Zone, the Sakura Town covers an area of about 1730 Mu (115.3 Hectares). In 2014, surrounding tourism resources such as Camellia Park, Sakura Park, Yuantong Temple, the old site of the New Fourth Army’s Northward Withdrawal Command, Zhongdai Old Street and Zhongxi Shopping Mall were integrated to create an international tourism town incorporating sightseeing of a flower sea, Zen health preservation, tourism leisure, parent-child experience and others.
